Cancer Support Services
A good place to start for any advice or general questions is the Cancer Society of New Zealand. There is also a range of specific cancer associations and support groups, such as CanTeen and NZ Breast Cancer Foundation.
Oncology Services
NZ has a number of specialised private oncology and haematology clinics throughout the country. There are also Oncology Specialists available for a wide range of cancers.
Skin Cancer
A wide range of medical specialists provide services relating to skin cancer, including dermatologists, general surgeons, head & neck surgeons and plastic and reconstructive surgeons.
Radiation Oncology
Radiation Oncology provides the medical care and management of patients with cancer and other medical conditions through the conduct and supervision of radiation treatment, advice and provision of palliative care.
Gynaecological Oncology
Gynaecological oncology services usually include colposcopy, a procedure in which a lighted magnifying instrument (a colposcope) is used to help examine the tissues of the vulva, vagina and cervix to assess pre-malignant (pre-cancerous) lesions; surgical treatment and biopsy of gynaecological cancers; and ongoing management and follow-up care.
Prostate Cancer
The PSA blood test is commonly done to screen men for prostate cancer and may often detect cancers before they cause any symptoms. Prostate biopsy (taking tissue samples) is used to confirm a cancer diagnosis and assess it. Prostate cancer treatment varies depending on the stage of the disease.
