Cardiac surgery involves the heart and large blood vessels around it, and thoracic surgery (surgery inside the chest) involves the lungs and any other thoracic organ. They may be separate surgicalspecialties or combined as cardiothoracic surgery. Generally, this surgery covers treatment of conditions of the heart (heart disease) and lungs (lung disease).more
